February Advocacy Spotlight : Sleep

This month, let us read a little about sleep, why its important and some steps we can take to improve our sleep.

February’s Advocacy Reading is: “Why Do We Need Sleep?”

Sleep is a major component of our everyday lives and is CRUCIAL for our well being. It supports memory consolidation and contributes to a more alert state when we are awake.

Unfortunately, as university students, we may find ourselves with poor sleep schedules. This can include getting very short amounts of sleep and stress-related interruptions in sleep, both of which have been shown to be unhealthy.

In addition to the short term effects related to one's focus, there are other potential long-term consequences of lack of sleep such as increased risk of obesity and cardiovascular disease.

This month, with these detriments in mind, let us read a little about sleep, why its important and some steps we can take to improve our sleep.
