Get Involved in Science Communication!

Science Communication makes scientific knowledge accessible for the general public! How could you get involved in science communication?

Science Communication is a very important aspect to the science community. It allows the general public to read and understand what is happening in the science community without needing a scientific background. It makes science-related information/studies accessible and comprehensible to the general public.

How could you get involved in science communication? A great start is to get involved with outreach activities offered on campus, such as joining a club/society. Getting involved with the community and volunteering projects allows you to gain valuable insight and skills. Another way you could get involved is by joining competitions! An amazing example of a science competition is the IgNITE Medical Case Competition. It’s a bilingual poster presentation contest held annually at the University of Ottawa. It gives students that have never stepped foot in a lab, and those who are completing their honours thesis, the opportunity to develop and present research proposals.

A possible bonus is getting a job at a science centre, such as a museum. Museums are popular attraction sites buzzing with people eager to learn. Ottawa has a great selection of science museums such as the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum, Canadian Museum of Nature, Canadian Agriculture and Food Museum, and most notably, the Canadian Science and Technology Museum. They’re super fun, great for experience, AND you get paid!
